CGS welcomes incoming board and commends outgoing board for service.
Pretoria, 02 October 2026 – The Council for Geoscience (CGS) welcomes the appointment of its incoming Board and extends its sincere appreciation to the outgoing Board for its leadership, oversight and contribution to the organisation during its term of office.
The appointment of the new Board marks an important transition in the governance of the CGS and provides an opportunity to build on the institutional progress achieved over the past term. The incoming Board brings a wealth of experience and expertise that will strengthen the CGS’s strategic oversight and support the continued execution of its mandate.
As South Africa’s national geoscience institution, the CGS plays a critical role in generating and managing geoscientific knowledge and information that informs decision making on mineral and energy resources, groundwater and water security, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, geohazards and broader national development priorities. The incoming Board will provide strategic guidance as the CGS continues to respond to emerging national and continental priorities, including critical minerals, energy security, climate resilience, water security and sustainable economic development.
CGS CEO, Mr Mosa Mabuza, said on the appointment: “we warmly welcome the incoming Board and look forward to working with its members to strengthen the CGS and advance its mandate. Their expertise will be important as we position geoscience to respond to South Africa’s evolving developmental priorities.”
Mabuza also expressed appreciation to the outgoing Board for its contribution to the organisation. “We thank the outgoing Board for its leadership, stewardship and commitment to the Council. Their contribution has helped strengthen the institution and has provided a solid foundation for the next chapter of the CGS.”
The organisation will facilitate a structured transition to ensure continuity of governance, institutional knowledge and strategic priorities. The organisation remains committed to delivering its programmes and services while strengthening partnerships across government, industry, academia and the broader geoscience community.
The CGS congratulates the incoming Board on its appointment and wishes the members a successful and impactful term. The incoming board comprises of the following members: Mr Kelepile Dintwe (Chairperson), Mr Mosa Mabuza (CEO and Ex-Officio), Dr Siyanda Mngadi, Dr Mayshree Singh, Ms Thobeka Njozela, Dr Mdu Zakwe, Mr Lindelani Mudau, Ms Millicent Solomons, Dr Patience Gwaze.

The Council for Geoscience is South Africa’s national custodian of all geoscientific data and information both onshore and offshore. Established under the Geoscience Act (Act No. 100 of 1993), the CGS is mandated to promote geoscience research, extend the body of knowledge in the field geoscience and provide specialized geoscientific services.
