The Council for Geoscience (CGS) can confirm that an earthquake occurred on Sunday morning 06 November 2022 at around 09:29 (South African Standard Time). The earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network (SANSN), with a preliminary epicentre located in the Mnkangala region of Kwa-Zulu Natal, approximately 40 km north of Kokstad.
A separate earthquake occurred on Saturday 05 November 2022 at around 14:32 (SAST). The epicentre was located approximately 40 km north-east of Greytown and 30 km east of Tugela Ferry, in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. This earthquake also registered a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the SANSN.
The CGS can further confirm that the two earthquakes did not occur along the same geological structure (fault), but might be inter-related on a much more regional scale. Moreover, the CGS would like to assure the South African public that there is no cause for panic. A team of technical experts is currently analysing the preliminary epicentre locations and magnitudes.
The CGS is the custodian of the SANSN which monitors seismic wave activities throughout the Country. The public is encouraged to record their experiences using the available online questionnaire. For live updates and to record your experiences, please visit www.geoscience.org.za
