Statement on the passing of Prof Morris Vilojen

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) has learnt with sadness of the recent passing of Professor Morris Viljoen. Professor Viljoen had a successful career spanning over 60 years both as an academic and as a geologist working in the mining industry. He and his twin brother Professor Richard Viljoen are renowned for their extensive mapping of the Barbeton Greenstone Belt in Mpumalanga and their immense contribution to the geoscience field.

Prof.M ViljoenViljoen’s passion and dedication to Geoscience is admirable. He has contributed immeasurably to academia, through the authoring and co-authoring of geoscientific journals, books and many other publications while also developing many young geoscientists. Professor Viljoen was instrumental in South Africa’s successful hosting of the 35th International Geoscience Congress in 2016. His passing is indeed a grave loss to the geoscience community but his work has left an indelible mark in the geoscience field and has impacted many lives. The CGS joins the geoscience community in expressing its heartfelt condolences to the Viljoen family, his students, the Wits University, his colleagues and the geoscience community at large.
