| The Central Regions unit is based at the CGS head office in Pretoria. The primary function of the Central Regions Unit is to provide accurate, detailed geological base maps as well as add to the geological knowledge base necessary for the economic, industrial and scientific development of South Africa. In particular the unit is tasked with geological mapping in the Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces. The palaeontology division of the CGS forms part of the Central Regions unit and the secretariat of the South African Committee for Stratigraphy (SACS) is hosted by the unit. |

| Geological maps represent the geology (stratigraphy, lithology, structure and mineralisation) of specific portions of the earth's surface and are useful in the search for mineral commodities needed for the economic, industrial and scientific development of a country. These maps are useful to scientists in both the private and public sectors as an aid to mineral exploration, and are used by town-planners, environmentalists, engineering geologists, hydrologists as well as by local councils and provincial and government departments. |
