Pretoria Information Session

The Council for Geoscience would hereby like to invite you to an information session of an initiative entitled: “Earth Observation and Geological Hazard Assessment: Towards the creation of the South African Geological Hazard Observation System (SAGHOS)”. The aim of the session is to provide information on the project and showcase the deliverables, the website and GIS Portal.

Date: 28 August 2014
Time: 10:00 am - 13:30 pm

The workshop will be held at the Council for Geoscience Offices in Silverton, Pretoria. A map with directions is available on request.

Project Background
The Council for Geoscience is managing a project aimed at creating a South African Geological Hazards Observation System with funding from the Department of Science and Technology. The geohazards under investigation include landslides, erosion, sinkholes, problem soils, earthquakes and deformation due to mining/ groundwater abstraction.

The project focuses on developing the following:

  1. A geological hazard atlas with information of the various geological hazards and risk areas;
  2. A framework for assessing and monitoring geological hazards using remote sensing techniques; and
  3. A geological hazard observation system, including the atlas and the remote sensing framework, which is disseminated via a website and a GIS map viewer at www.geohazard.org.za.

he outputs of the project will be instrumental in the development of decision support/risk management systems aimed at assessing the risk posed by geological hazards. This will inform decision-makers in terms of their prevention and mitigation, as well as assist in adaption.
